Application of Salicylic Acid in Skin Care Products
2024.12.05
In the 1960s, salicylic acid began to be used topically to treat acne. After decades of application, the anti-acne effect of salicylic acid has been recognized by countless people. It has become one of the most popular anti-acne stars in both clinical and daily skin care products.

Salicylic acid can dissolve the cement between the cuticles and cause the cuticles to fall off, so it can remove the accumulated thick cuticles and promote metabolism.
Skin Metabolism: The main function of the stratum corneum of the skin is to protect the cells of each layer of the skin. The metabolism of epidermal cells layer by layer will naturally move outward. After the outermost layer of keratinocytes gradually ages and becomes hard, it will be naturally chipping. Old cuticles that have not been shed normally will make the skin look rough and dull, slow down the skin metabolism, and even form acne and block pores.
Exfoliation: Salicylic acid can remove excess stratum corneum and promote rapid renewal of epidermal cells; if the epidermal cells are fresh and full of vitality, the skin will naturally be restored to smooth and delicate skin.
Shrink Pores: Salicylic acid is fat-soluble and can penetrate into the deep layers of pores along the sebaceous glands that secrete oil. It is helpful to dissolve the old and accumulated stratum corneum in the pores and improve the clogging of the pores. Therefore, it can block the formation of acne and narrow the pores.

Prevent Acne: Salicylic acid acts on hair follicle wall cells and can help clear blocked hair follicles and correct abnormal cell shedding. It can prevent pores from being blocked for mild acne and is most effective for blackheads. It can reduce hair follicle walls. Abnormal shedding prevents the occurrence of new lesions, but has no effect in reducing sebum secretion and eliminating acne bacteria.
Salicylic acid exfoliates and promotes skin metabolism, shrinks pores, clears blackheads, and effectively reduces fine lines and wrinkles, thereby restoring skin's radiance. Salicylic acid is indeed great. The concentration of salicylic acid must be above 0.5% to be effective, and 1%-2% is even better. In addition, pH value is also an important factor, and it is best to be between 3 and 4.
In the following article, we’ll introduce about the difference of BHA, AHA and PHA in skincare product. And how they apply on different skin.
